We’re not usually too down with enterprise-services action, but it’s hard not to notice HP’s $12-13B bid to buy out rival Electronic Data Systems. EDS is best remembered for that “Herding Cats” Super Bowl commercial, but things have been rough lately — the company just posted 62 percent decline in first-quarter profits. Still, EDS remains a leader in technology outsourcing, and HP seems to think that it’ll be better able to take down Big Blue’s powerhouse services and consulting group if they merge. The deal isn’t done yet, but we should know how things go soon.
Update: The deal is done. HP confirmed that it’s buying EDS for $25 per share or $12.5 billion. EDS will be rebranded, “EDS — an HP company” in recognition of its own corporate blandness.
Intel’s been making a lot of noise about MIDs for a while now, but we’re going to guarantee that the entire category flops if this first wave of pricing info is accurate. Australian importer Tegatech’s got the Gigabyte M528 up for pre-order, and while we’re intrigued by the 800MHz Atom processor, 512MB of RAM, and 8GB SSD, we’re certainly not willing to pay AU$1199 ($1131) to satisfy our curiosity — especially since the Linux build was so half-baked when we played with this thing at CeBIT. Of course, this isn’t official pricing (and it’s actually dropped from AU$1549 since we first saw the listing), but let’s hope this is even more inaccurate than usual, eh?

Our brethren over at Engadget Chinese had the chance to size-up HTC’s new Windows Mobile 6.1 Touch Diamond with Apple’s iPhone this morning in Taiwan. We have to admit, HTC’s CEO was dead-on when he claimed that the Diamond’s “not too big, not too small” after seeing it side-by-side with Microsoft’s left-coast nemesis. We think we’ve already got a handle on the various chipset revisions planned for Microsoft’s too-beautiful-for-this-world Xbox 360*, but it looks like that planned 45nm “Valhalla” combined CPU / GPU motherboard design we’ve been hearing about might also come in a redesigned, smaller case. That’s certainly news to us, but TG Daily has the refresh happening on the same fall-2009 timeline we’ve been hearing about, so at least all these sketchy rumors line up. We’ll see when we see — it sounds like the 65nm Jasper units are coming off the line for that August release in the meantime to keep us all warm at night.
