Nokia E71 sneaks into the wild once again

Friday, April 25th, 2008 | News with No Comments »

Nokia’s having a bit of trouble keeping its E71 QWERTY business phone under wraps, with that initial sighting in January, and now another couple in-the-wild shots to keep us interested. If anything this serves confirm those previous shots, but it’s nice to see some autofocus on this 3.2 megapixel puppy. If our powers of badly-translated Chinese deduction are correct, the third picture of the set could be the E66, but we’re not jumping to any conclusions just yet.

Motorola’s W755 for Verizon is like a breath of fresh (or stale) air

Friday, April 25th, 2008 | News with No Comments »

Remember that spellbinding page-turner of a user guide for Motorola’s W755 that we brought you a while back? Of course you do — how could anyone forget? The anticipation of a new model in Moto’s W line of low- to midrange handsets is always nearly too much to bear for us, as we’re sure it is for you. Anyway, enough with the ribbing and onto business: press shots of the Verizon-bound flip have surfaced, showing that the phone will be available in at least two shades, black and purple. With a 1.3 megapixel camera on board it’s not about to set any records or turn any heads, but the external touch-sensitive music controls are a bonus — and hey, we guess a choice of colors is always nice. Still no word on a release here, so we hope these shots will hold you over in the meanwhiles.

Vodafone Germany launching two DVB-T sets next month

Friday, April 25th, 2008 | News with No Comments »

Germany’s been one of the European countries protesting the hardest against the EU’s selection of DVB-H as the union’s mobile TV standard of choice — and for good reason, seeing how it already had a nice little chunk of cash sunk into T-DMB. We’re not sure if this is Germany’s version of passive-aggressive civil disobedience or if this is just how they plan on rolling for the time being, but Vodafone Germany is actually looking at rolling out a pair of phones next month that simply pull down plain ol’ DVB-T signals — the kind generally destined for home televisions, not pockets. This obviously gives the service a far larger footprint and content profile right off the bat, but the tradeoff is that DVB-T was never designed for the small screen and suffers from a greater power draw than either DVB-H or T-DMB. Anyhoo, the phones in question are the Windows Mobile-powered g-Smart t600 from Gigabyte alongside LG’s HB620T clamshell. Both are expected to go out the door for about €100 ($159) on contract, apparently, which is just as well seeing how the t600 lacked 3G data last time we checked in on it. Who’d really trade fast data for television that’s going to drain your battery faster than you can say “David Hasselhoff,” anyway?

Sprint pushing national QChat launch back to June 15?

Friday, April 25th, 2008 | News with No Comments »

Looks like we might all be waiting just a few more weeks before we’re given the green light to descend into the next generation of push-to-talk nirvana (or hell, depending on your perspective). phoneArena is claiming that the national release of Sprint’s QChat-powered PTT system — and the phones to go along with it — has been pushed back to June 15, though it’s not known whether the delay’s due to technical issues, a desire to have all of the new phones available on shelves at once, CEO Dan Hesse’s whim, or something else entirely. For what it’s worth, business customers in Denver and Kansas City already have access to the Sanyo PRO handsets, so you guys should really revel in your exclusivity while you still can.

Limited edition Renault Sandero to boast Nokia branding, N95

Friday, April 25th, 2008 | News with No Comments »

Nothing shows your complete and unwavering devotion to a handset maker like buying an ultra-rare vehicle with its logos on there, wouldn’t you agree? Those vigorously nodding up and down (well, those vigorously nodding up and down in Brazil) can get set to grab a limited edition Renault Sandero, which will come “fully equipped with Nokia’s navigation system and [undisclosed] car add-ons.” The super-special Sandero will come stocked with an N95 and cost around €17,650 ($27,693), but you’d better hurry, as only 1,000 of these niche motorcars are being built. It’s like Nokia heard your cries for letting the chance to nab one of those co-branded Twingos slip through your too-busy-texting thumbs or something.

$100 femtocells to be sold by AT&T?

Friday, April 25th, 2008 | News with No Comments »

Yep, we’re mandating that this one be filed in the rumor folder for now, but according to a report from ThinkPanmure, AT&T Mobility is planning to move up to 7 million femtocells acquired from UK-based ip.access. As the story goes, AT&T inked a contract with the aforesaid firm for up to half a billion dollars in femtocells over five years, and it’s supposedly aiming to sell each to end users for “as little as $100.” As expected, spokespeople for AT&T and ip.access weren’t around / didn’t care to comment on the matter, but a dame from the former did admit that it was “examining the potential benefits of femtocells through lab tests and planned to conduct a trial later this year.” Of course, AT&T wouldn’t be the first US carrier to offer the boxes, but it’s not like Sprint’s $49.99 Airave set any sales records or anything when it launched late last year.
